Chicago’s Brookfield Zoo treated its resident primates to some peanut butter on March 1, in celebration of National Peanut Butter Lovers Day.
Footage released by the zoo shows its orangutans and Western lowland gorillas tucking in.
According to the zoo, the primates occasionally receive peanut butter and other food items for enrichment. The zoo wanted to simulate foraging behavior, so smeared the peanut butter on a rock face where the orangutans were able to get it using sticks. For the gorillas, the peanut butter was placed inside naturalistic-looking tree stumps, with the gorillas using fingers or twigs to poke it out.
Animal care staff are always trying to think of new ways to physically and mentally stimulate the animals, Brookfield Zoo said.
