Animals get an eyeful as camels tour Syracuse Zoo

Two camels enjoyed a stroll through the deserted Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse, New York, on Tuesday, March 24, as part of a national “closed but still caring” campaign prompted by the coronavirus pandemic.

Rosamond Gifford Zoo said it would be closed through the month of April due to growing restrictions meant to lessen the spread of COVID-19.

The facility said it was joining other zoos and aquariums for the #BringingTheZooToYou and #ClosedButStillCaring social media campaigns, which connect an online audience to the zoos despite their closures.

Rosamond Gifford Zoo shared this footage of a walk organized for two Bactrian camels, named Patrick and George. This video shows the camels ambling through the zoo’s Wildlife Trail, passing several other animals’ enclosures.

In addition to exercising the camels, the walk provided enrichment to animals they passed, including an Amur tiger, Asian elephants, white-lipped deer, and more.
