WASHINGTON (ABC7) — Uber will no longer just be a ride-hailing company.
Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi announced Wednesday at a future of mobility event that its launching a service that will allow users to be able to rent other people’s cars through the Uber app, among other new options.
In San Francisco, an Uber pilot program will allow users to rent a stranger’s car who isn’t using it through a startup called Getaround.
In some cities, Uber users will also be able to rent Jump Bikes’ electric bikes, as well as buy bus and train tickets.
The announcement is part of Uber's vision to reduce car ownership, something it calls a worldwide problem.
Uber also announced that it will be begin sharing its aggregated data with cities in hopes of reducing congestion, something D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser says could be a game changer.
While Bowser and Khosrowshahi agree fewer cars and better mass transit are a win-win, Uber's new leader has reservations about Bowser’s proposed tax on ride shares to subsidize Metro.
Bowser defended her ride share tax, saying it’s currently too low. She also said she could sign the historic $175 million Metro-dedicated funding bill as early as the end of this week.
