ORLANDO, Fla. (CBS12) — If you are what you eat, then this man may be the most valuable jewelry thief in the world - after allegedly downing Tiffany & Co. earrings worth over three-quarters of a million dollars.
The Orlando Police Department stated that on February 26, at the Mall of Millenia, 32-year-old Jaythan Lawrence Gilder of Houston, Texas, entered the Tiffany store under the pretense of representing an Orlando Magic player.
The probable cause affidavit says that Gilder inquired about high-value diamond earrings and rings before being escorted to a private viewing room by store employees.
According to officials, in a sudden burst Gilder reportedly jumped up, took the earrings worth $769,500 as well as a ring worth over a half-million dollars, and attempted to escape, injuring one of the employees in the process. Witnesses say he dashed toward the food court, evading capture momentarily as the store staff raised the alarm.

Surveillance footage from the mall’s parking lot allowed police to track down Gilder and take him into custody.
The report states that as Gilder was apprehended by the Florida Highway Patrol, he allegedly swallowed the stolen earrings. Scans conducted at the Washington County Jail later confirmed the presence of the diamonds in his stomach.
During his booking process, he reportedly posed a question to jail staff: "Am I going to be charged with what's in my stomach?"
Gilder faces has been accused of robbery and grand theft. He also has 48 outstanding warrants in Colorado.
