PORTLAND, Ore. (KATU) – Wednesday night into early Thursday morning, a special full moon is expected to make an appearance. It’s called the Strawberry Moon.

Experts say it’s considered one of the most colorful moons of the year because it takes a low, shallow path across the sky.

Some moonlight is then forced to travel through the Earth’s atmosphere, which gives the moon its orange or yellow tint.

According to the Maine Farmer’s Almanac, Algonquin tribes called the last moon of spring the Strawberry Moon, which was inspired by the relatively short season for harvesting strawberries in the Northeast.

Although this moon is visible in early summer, it’s still considered a Strawberry Moon.

We’re also expected to get our closest view of Saturn overnight.
