Police in Colorado are searching for a 200-year-old painting of George Washington that was stolen from a storage unit in January.

The Englewood Police Department said they were first alerted to the missing "national treasure" when they received a call regarding the theft of a historical art piece from a storage facility in the 3300 block of South Santa Fe Drive. The theft possibly happened the night of Jan. 10, officials added.

"The painting is of our first president, George Washington, and was created in the early 1800s," a Facebook post from police said. "The approximate size of the piece is 24 inches by 30 inches, measured in a gold-colored frame. The value is undisclosed and hard to estimate due to its historical significance."

The Englewood Police Department is being assisted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation – Denver Office.

A reward of up to $2,000 is being offered by Crime Stoppers for tips about where the painting may be. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
