BAKERSFIELD, CALIF. (KBAK/KBFX) — A live military hand grenade that might have once belonged to a World War II veteran was found in a California woman's house, according to authorities.
The Bakersfield Police Department said they received "a call of found property" on Monday around 3:15 p.m. EDT.
Officers said they discovered a live military hand grenade when they arrived at the scene.
An investigation showed that a widow found the grenade in a shoebox that belonged to her husband.
Officers believe the husband obtained it from a family member who served in the military during World War II.
The department's Bomb Squad took possession of the grenade and rendered it safe.
