New DVD, Blu-ray and digital release highlights for the week of November 16-22, 2020

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — It's a busy week as we edge closer to the holiday season. "The New Mutants," "The Broken Hearts Gallery," and "Unhinged" all had a go at wide theatrical releases with varying success. We'll see if any of the three find a second life on home video.

New to DVD, Blu-ray and Digital

Digital

• The Nest -Jude Law and Carrie Coon star in director/writerSean Durkin's tale ofO'Hara family who leave the comforts of America to live in an English manor. There, the dysfunctional aspects of the marriage come into focus as Rory (Law), the patriarch, is revealed to be all ambition, no actual talent or worth ethic. Likely to be an Oscar contender for Law, Coon and Durkin.
• Dreamland -Eugene Evans (Finn Cole), a directionless young man, meets Allison Wells (Margot Robbie), a woman accused of taking part in a bank robbery where a young girl was killed as Allison and her boyfriend fled the scene. Set in the 1930s, "Dreamland" feels inspired by the criminal exploits of Clyde Champion Barrow and Bonnie Parker. The film never feels quite as dangerous or warmly nostalgic as it should, but I'll be damned if I didn't want to run off and rob a few banks with Wells.

New to DVD and Blu-ray

• 2067 - The future of humankind is in the past.Kodi Smit-McPhee stars asEthan Whyte, a blue collar worker who travels back in time using technology designed by his father in hopes of providing the future breathable air.
• The Broken Hearts Gallery -With each break up, Lucy (Geraldine Viswanathan) adds to her collection of items connected to failed relationships.Nick (“Stranger Things” alum Dacre Montgomery) might be the man who gives her reason to let it all go. (Full Review)
• Monstrum - Is a South Korean period thriller set in 1527. A plague has spread through the land and a monster may be its source.
• The New Mutants -Five teenage mutants are brought together in a remote facility to learn how to control their newfound powers. "The New Mutants" is an orphan of Fox's X-Men franchise that was dropped into theaters mid-pandemic. Considering how long it took for the film to come out, it's something of a miracle that it came out at all. Solid cast, a few really good ideas and a whole lot of wasted potential. (Full Review)
• Relic -Emily Mortimer, Robyn Nevin, Bella Heathcote star in this unusual haunted house horror. When Edna (Nevin), an old woman with dementia, disappears, her daughter and granddaughter (Mortimer and Heathcote) return to the family home in hopes of finding her. When Edna returns covered in bruises, she has no memories of ever being away. (Full Review)
• Westworld: Season Three - The third season ofJonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy's update ofMichael Crichton's 1973 film.Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood) experiences life outside of the amusement park.
• Unhinged -A road rage incident spirals out of control when a psychotic man (Russell Crowe) looks to teach a single mom (Caren Pistorius) a lesson. "Unhinged" is a meanspirited throwback to 1970s revenge thrillers. Crowe goes all in for his performance. A little subtlety would have gone a long way. (Full Review)

Catalog Titles and Box Sets

• Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai-Jim Jarmusch's film about a mafia hitman, played by Forest Whitaker, who practices the ancient samurai code is without question an odd cinematic journey. It's also one worth taking as Whitaker offers a tremendous performance as a man out of sync with the modern world who finds meaning in a ideology that has no connection to himself.
• Moonstruck -Cher and Nicolas Cage star in theNorman Jewison romantic comedy about a woman who falls in love with the brother of the man she is meant to marry. Released in 1987, "Moonstruck" was a massive hit and something of a cultural phenomenon (I was 11 years old, but remember the ever-present news stories and advertisements). Cher won an Academy Award for her performance.
• Silent Running -Douglas Huntley Trumbull is known for his visual effects work on films like "2001: A Space Odyssey," "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," and "Blade Runner." He also directed 1983's "Brainstorm" and "Silent Running," a sci-fi film from 1972. Set aboard theValley Forge, a spaceship with biodomes designed to grown plants and trees that will be used in thereforestation of Earth. When the Valley Forge is ordered to jettison and destroy its domes,Freeman Lowell (Bruce Dern), one of the four aboard the space craft, refuses. Recommended.
• It's a Wonderful Life 4K Steelbook - Paramount is re-issuing their excellent 4K version of the classis holiday film "It's a Wonderful Life" is new steelbook packaging. It's a spectacular release that belongs in every 4K library.
• The Croods 4K - With it's sequel set to be in theaters for Thanksgiving, 2013'th animated adventure "The Croods" is making its 4K debut. The film follows Grug (Nicholas Cage) and his family as they travel to find a new home after theirs is destroyed in an earthquake. The Blu-ray looked marvelous, I suspect the improved color range will offer a reasonable upgrade.
• Resident Evil: The Complete Collection 4K - We all have our guilty pleasures, the Resident Evil film franchise is one of mine. The road to 4K for the franchise has been a strange one. Only "Resident Evil: Afterlife" and "Resident Evil: The Final Chapter" (the 4th and 6th films) have previously been release in the physical 4K format. This set includes all six films (including both the theatrical and extended versions of the second film "Resident Evil: Apocalypse.").
  
• Weathering with You: 4K Collector's Edition - Shout! Factory's Collector's Edition ofMakoto Shinkai's latest film includes 4K and standard Blu-rays, a bonus Blu-ray and a CD of the film's soundtrack.
