WASHINGTON (Sinclair Broadcast Group) — One month before the film’s release, Marvel Studios stepped up promotion for “Avengers: Endgame” Tuesday with new posters and a featurette highlighting all the characters who disappeared at the end of last year’s “Infinity War”—including one apparent off-screen death that has angered some Twitter users.
“Avengers: Infinity War” ended with villain Thanos snapping his fingers and wiping out half the universe and most of the heroes who have been introduced since 2012’s original “Avengers” film. “Endgame” finds the remaining characters regrouping, along with Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, for a desperate attempt to save the world.
The Marvel Studios account unveiled more than two dozen #AvengeTheFallen character posters Tuesday, with the surviving characters shown in color and the dead in black and white. Most of the heroes’ fates were revealed on-screen last year, but the posters offered a few surprises (Wong lives! Valkyrie returns!).
Fans had an opportunity to mourn Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther after he disintegrated in “Infinity War,” but it appears his sister Shuri was also wiped out. Fans of the character, played by Letitia Wright, were not pleased with the revelation, and the character's name trended on Twitter for much of the afternoon as they vented their frustration.
To drive the stakes of “Endgame” home, Marvel also released “We Lost,” a YouTube featurette reminding audiences that the heroes indeed lost in “Infinity War” and this is, in fact, the endgame.
Of course, it seems fairly likely the Avengers will find a way to reverse most, if not all, of the deaths inflicted by Thanos by the conclusion of “Endgame”’s three-hour runtime. If nothing else, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and the Black Panther all have previously-announced sequels to star in.
“Avengers: Endgame” hits theaters April 26.
