MUSC board rescinds Bill Cosby's honorary degree

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - On Saturday, The Medical University of South Carolina expected to graduate some 644 new health care professionals from its six colleges: dental medicine, graduate studies, health professions, medicine, nursing and pharmacy.

One person not recognized with an MUSC degree was Bill Cosby.

The board of trustees voted to rescind the honorary degree of William H. Cosby due to his recent conviction.

Cosby received the honorary degree Doctor of Humane Letters on May 21, 1999.

The meeting to rescind his degree was held May 18.

Cosby will be sentenced Sept. 24, almost five months to the day after he was convicted of sexual assault. Cosby is convicted of three counts of aggravated indecent assault stemming from an incident where he was found guilty of drugging and sexually assaulting a woman.

MUSC is the latest institution to rescind an honorary degree from the fallen comedian. Earlier this month, The Kennedy Center voted to rescind two of its biggest honors it had awarded Cosby -- the Kennedy Center Honors and the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
