Report: Live action 'Powerpuff Girls' series in development for CW

WASHINGTON (SBG) – “The Powerpuff Girls” is heading back to mainstream television.

According to Deadline, the super-powered trio is receiving the live-action treatment, as the classic Cartoon Network series is being reworked for The CW.

The live-action adaption will feature adult versions of the three kindergarten-aged girls.In the updated version of the series, the "titular superheroes are now disillusioned twentysomethings who resent having lost their childhood to crime fighting," according to the report.

Originally created by Craig McCracken, the new project is lead by writers and executive producers Diablo Cody (Juno, United States of Tara), Heather Regnier (Veronica Mars), Warner Bros. TV and studio-based Berlanti Productions.

The original series was about a professor who accidentally creates three elementary school aged superheroes, Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup, who fight to protect their city from evil villains. The show ran for six seasons and 78 episodes between 1998 and 2005.

Along with the TV show, “The Powerpuff Girls Movie” was released in 2002, while a rebooted animated series began airing on Cartoon Network in 2016.

With much of Hollywood is still under lockdown due to the coronavirus pandemic, there's no word on when the new show will air.
