With July upon us, it's time to say goodbye to a few cinematic friends as they move on to wherever their next destination might be. Here are three titles that I'd recommend checking out before they're gone.
The Princess and the Frog
"The Princess and the Frog" was a modest box office success earning $267 million against a $105 million budget . Artistically, it is one of my favorite Disney releases of all time as it remixes the classic "The Princess Frog" story with a New Orleans vibe. I loveKeith David asvoodoo bokor Dr. Facilier almost as much as I adoreAnika Noni Rose as princess/waitress Tiana. (Leaving 7/15/21)
Spotlight
Tom McCarthy's "Spotlight" explores the role a groups of Boston Globe journalists played in revealing the far-reaching coverup of of child molestation by the Catholic Church. It's one of the best films about the struggle and strain that comes with being a journalist. The cast includesMark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams,Liev Schreiber, andJohn Slattery. The film won an Oscar for Best Picture and Best Screenplay. (Leaving 7/30/21)
Mad Max
The impact that 1979's "Mad Max" had on the post-apocalyptic genre cannot be understated.George Miller's punk-infused action film is a bleak look at the future. A leather-clad tale of violence and retribution. As if the end of the world was ever going to be pretty. It might not have the visual polish of "Mad Max: Fury Road" but the grit and smell of octane most certainly is. This was the film that paved the way for Mel Gibson to become an international star.
