With the Sundance Film Festival more or less behind me (there will be a round up in the next day or so that will officially see me putting this year's festival to bed), it's time to look at the monthly exodus of films from Netflix in February 2022. There's not a lot here. Still, there are a handful of classics, favorites and a few underseen titles of note. Let's take a look.
Brothers Benny and Josh Safdie found themselves in the spotlight with 2019's "Uncut Gems," but I have vastly prefer their 2017 movie "Good Time." Robert Pattinson stars as Connie Nikas, a small-time criminal, who sees his brother Nick (Benny Safdie) arrested when his plans to rob a bank go terribly awry. Desperate, Connie embarks on a journey through New York City's underbelly in hopes of finding $10,000 to bail his brother out of jail. (Leaving 2/19/22)
Nadine's (Hailee Steinfeld) already miserable life is made all the worse when her older brother (Blake Jenner) starts dating her best friend (Haley Lu Richardson). Looking for support, Nadine turns to one of her high school teachers, Mr. Bruner (Woody Harrelson). Mr. Bruner wishes she looked to someone else. Anyone else. (Leaving 2/26/22)
It's strange to think that there was a point in my life where I knew David Bowie only as an actor in Jim Henson's "Labyrinth." That would have been the case in 1986 when the film was released. I had just turned 10 years old and thought Bowie's Goblin King Jareth was the coolest thing ever. Still do. For those unaware, Jennifer Connelly stars as Sarah who wishes someone would just come and take her younger brother away so that she wouldn't be burdened with having to take care of him. Jareth obliges. Now, Sarah will have to travel into goblin king's world to bring him back.(Leaving 2/28/22)
Based on a 1962 trading card collection, "Mars Attacks!" is director Tim Burton's delirious take on the classic alien invasion films that he would have watched growing up. Dark comedy abounds. (Leaving 2/28/22)
The only bad thing I can say about "Terminator 2: Judgement Day" is that it was so successful on a critical and financial level that we've been asked to sit through four additional Terminator films that haven't come close to matching its quality. Arnold Schwarzenegger returns as The Terminator, but this time he's protecting Sarah Connor's (Linda Hamilton) son John (Edward Furlong) from T-1000 (Robert Patrick), an upgraded Terminator sent to kill him.
