WASHINGTON (Circa) -- Earl F. Brosnahan, Kate Spade's father, died at the age of 89 on Wednesday night. Brosnahan died just one day before his daughter's funeral was set to be held in Kansas City on Thursday.
“We are deeply saddened to announce that Katy’s father, Earl F. Brosnahan, Jr. (Frank), passed away last night at age 89. He had been in failing health of late and was heartbroken over the recent death of his beloved daughter. He was at home and surrounded by family at the time of his passing," a statement from the family said.
Brosnahan was a Navy veteran who worked in his family's construction business. His family says he was an avid golfer and tennis player and a lifelong resident of Kansas City.
He is survived by his wife Sandy, three bothers and a sister, five children, eight grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Spade passed away on June 5 after hanging herself in her New York apartment.
