WASHINGTON (SBG) — Google is known for its unique homepages commemorating anniversaries, people and events. On Wednesday, the search engine used the feature to honor an important figure of the past.
The Google doodle highlights the life of IsraelKamakawiwo'ole. The animation features the Hawaiian singer-songwriter's beloved rendition of "Over the Rainbow" on what would have been his 61st birthday.
Kamakawiwoole died June 26, 1997, but that hasn't stopped his impact. He is widely credited as forever changing the face of Hawaiian music, many referring to him as the "Voice of Hawaii."
Wednesday's pick also honors Asian and Pacific Islander American Heritage Month, which runs through the end of May.
