DAVIE, Fla. (CBS12) — The news of the college football season, or lack there of, made its way to the Dolphins training facility in Davie on Monday.
During a zoom call with the media, Dolphins head coach, Brian Flores, was asked if he thinks there will be a full NFL season.
“I think we take things day by day by day,” said Flores in transcripts provided by Dolphins media.
“We try to use caution and the testing that we’re doing – continue the testing – distance, wear masks and we just kind of string those days together. If we do that as an entire league, then we’re going to put ourselves in the best position to play as many games as we can play, and that’s really all we can do. To make predictions on whether or not we can do this or that, I don’t want to get into all that. All I’ll say is we’re going to try to wear our masks, wear our contact tracers, distance and do the best we can. Obviously we all know that it’s an airborne virus and people can get infected quickly, so all we can do is do our best to prevent that from happening. I think if we do that, we’ll give ourselves a chance to play a full season which is all – that’s all we can do.”
Presidents from the Big Ten Conference voted Monday to cancel the fall football season, three sources confirmed the decision to the Detroit Free Press. However, after the news broke, a spokesman for the conference said a final decision had not been made.
The news comes less than 24 hours after commissioners from the Power 5 conferences held an emergency meeting on Sunday night to discuss the possibility of postponing the fall sports season, including football.
There is growing concern among college athletics officials that the upcoming football season and other fall sports can't be played because of the coronavirus pandemic, sources told ESPN.
The ACC nor the SEC has canceled its season yet, which would affect the Florida State Seminoles and the Florida Gators.
Big Ten’s decision comes just two days after the Mid-American Conference on Saturday became the first FBS league to postpone the fall sports season, including football.
