Nurse in London dismayed by empty supermarket shelves after 'full day at work'

Major UK supermarkets Tesco and Sainsbury’s implemented new rules on March 18 to prevent stockpiling and food shortages, telling shoppers they can only buy three of any grocery item, with a limit of two on toilet paper, soap, and long-life milk.

Panic-buying has cleared out supermarket shelves across the world, spurred by concerns over the spread of the novel coronavirus.

Aldi was the first supermarket in the UK to implement rationing, effective Monday, March 16, local media reported, with customers only allowed to buy four items of any one product per visit.

Sainsbury’s released a statement on Wednesday announcing they were focused on getting “as much food and other essential items onto shelves as we possibly can.”

This video shows the bare shelves at a London Sainsbury’s on Thursday night, shared by an off-duty nurse looking for bread. “After a full day at work serving the NHS as I do every day, I go to shop for food and am greeted with this,” the uploader said. “Emotional doesn’t even cut it.”
