Firefighters applauded health care workers and blared sirens from their trucks in lower Manhattan on April 1 in a show of support for their emergency-response colleagues battling the COVID-19 outbreak in the city.

“Selfless heroism is at the heart of every first responder,” New York-Presbyterian said on Twitter in response to the event.

In addition to the citywide lockdown to prevent the spread of COVID-19, New York City officials have closed playgrounds and most businesses, and have extended a stay-at-home order until at least April 15.

There have been at least 83,712 coronavirus cases in New York State as of April 1, with 47,439 concentrated in New York City, according to the New York State Department of Health.
