Teen serenades his 87-year-old grandmother while she's in hospice care, quarantined

BETHESDA, Md. (WJLA) – A 17-year-old is hoping to lift his grandmother's spirits while she's quarantined and in hospice care at Brighton Gardens, an assisted living facility in Bethesda, Maryland.

Samuel Moritzkat said, “Recently she’s been suffering from strokes a lot, so the past few years I haven’t been able to talk to her that much.”

Dorthy, 87, has been quarantined and unable to see any family members for at least three weeks.

“I’m happy I could do this for her after all she has done for me. It made me cry; I got emotional," explained Sam.

While Sam can't hug or visit her, he wanted to remind her she is not forgotten.

So, he decided to set up in the parking lot of her assisted living home and serenade her with a guitar over the speakers.

"Country roads, take me home. To the place, I belong," Dorthy sang along from inside while a nurse filmed her.

Sam said this was his first time ever singing to his grandmother.

“I love his music," Dorthy laughed.

“Should we have him come back and play again?" the nurse asked.

"Yes," Dorthy said.
