CHARLEVOIX COUNTY, Mich. (WPBN/WGTU) - A northern Michigan World War II veteran jumped out of an airplane over the weekend, all in the name of charity.

Richard "Dick" Grout, 97, made his second jump during the Parachute for Polio fundraiser held at the Charlevoix Municipal Airport on Sunday.

About two dozen Rotary Club members throughout northern Michigan jumped out of a plane to raise funds to help stop polio.

Grout was able to raise more than $3,000 toward the effort of stopping polio.

Grout served as a U.S. Army combat engineer in Europe on D-Day but never parachuted during his time in the military.

Organizers said the funds raised during Sunday's event surpassed the group's goal of raising $100,000.
