Woman rescued after spending hours 'hanging by her feet' between boulders

A woman found herself in a precarious situation earlier this month in Australia when she attempted to retrieve her phone from among boulders and ended up trapped upside down for over an hour.

The incident occurred in the Hunter Valley region, where she slipped into a 10-foot-deep crevice and spent about seven hours stuck between massive rocks.

New South Wales Ambulance reported that the woman's friends initially tried to free her but had to call for help after their attempts proved unsuccessful.Photos of the rescue operation were shared on Monday. The post shared by officials, stated that the woman was suspended "hanging by her feet upside down for over an hour" before crews arrived.

A specialized rescue crew arrived and used a "hardwood frame" to secure themselves as they along with multiple agencies, worked to reach her. Eventually about seven hours into the rescue, they lifted a 1,100-pound boulder, freeing the woman, who managed to get out with only cuts and scrapes.

"In my 10 years as a rescue paramedic, I had never encountered a job quite like this," said Peter Watts, an NSW Ambulance Specialist Rescue Paramedic. "It was challenging but incredibly rewarding."

After the ordeal, Matilda Campbell expressed her gratitude on Facebook, writing, "I wanted to give the biggest shoutout to my friends, the team who worked so hard to get me out. I’m forever thankful as most likely I would not be here today. I love you guys and you mean the world to me."

Campbell humorously described herself as "the most accident-prone person ever" in a previous post and mentioned she is taking a break from rock exploration.
