VISALIA, Calif. (KMPH)CHI — A man was casually pumping gas in California when he spotted something you don't see every day.
An 11-year-old boy pulled up to the neighborhood store in Visalia, California, to buy stuff in a pink battery-powered toy Hummer.
“I see this kid in a pink car and he's owning it and he doesn't care who is around, and so I thought that was pretty neat," Eric Sapien said.
What surprised the man who captured it all on video was the kid parked his Hummer in a parking stall at the Chinowth Git & Go, used the door to get out and when he returned, he backed out and "drove away like an adult."
This kid is a legend. High gas prices aren’t stopping him. I wish I had his confidence when I was a kid. He made my day. You go, young man," Sapien said.
Other customers told KMPH they'd seen the boy before and another said he saw the video and thought it was funny.
KMPH's Armando Carreno and Mayra Franco drove around the neighborhood near the store to see if they would run into the young boy in the video — they did. They found the little pink hummer parked in the driveway.
Who's behind the wheel? Eleven-year-old Jason Perez.
“I was surprised ... I had no idea," Jason's mom, Aimee Lejeune, said. “Well, he really wasn’t supposed to. He kind of sneaked out."
Jason apologized to his mom and his mom laughed and hugged him.
Jason, he struggles sometimes. He has special needs. He likes to go out and do his own thing once in a while. He’s a really sweet loving boy," she said.
KMPH showed them the video that is putting smiles on many people's faces.
“People just think it’s great. They thought it was hilarious," Sapien said. “Give him a fist bump for me and tell him I owe him a Mountain Dew because I just feel like he’d be a cool kid to hang out with and introduce him to my kids."
Jason turns 12 years old Sunday. Sinclair Broadcast Group wishes him a happy birthday!
