Video shows deer, moose and even pumas using Utah's animal overpass

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) - Months after opening one of Utah's first wildlife overpasses, there is some pretty cute evidence that the bridge is saving the lives of animals while protecting drivers.

The bridge, built over Interstate 80 near Parley's Summit, was completed in December, with a $5 million cost. Erin Ferguson from Save People, Save Wildlife, said that at least 46 deer, 14 moose and four elk were killed on that area of the road.

But video from Utah's Division of Wildlife Resources shows more animal diversity using the natural looking, disguised pathway.

In just a few moments of video deer, elk and moose are visible but so is a coyote, a small cat -- perhaps a bobcat -- and an unmistakable mountain lion.

According to UDOT, in 2017 Utah saw 2,996 animal-related car accidents. The year before, there were 3,198.

There are at least 48 wildlife crossings meant to guide deer and other animals across a busy highway.

Animals struck by vehicles is dangerous and expensive for drivers.
