VIDEO: 18-month-old child struggling to breathe saved by officer during traffic stop

WARREN, Mich. (TND) — Police body camera footage captured the moment an officer saved a toddler's life during a traffic stop in Michigan.

The video showsOfficer Brenden Fraser rush to the child's rescue as the 18-month-old's loved one hands him the child, who was not breathing.

Thanks to Officer Fraser’s heroic efforts, the child was able to be resuscitated and is back home with family members," according to a news release the Warren Police Department shared with The National Desk.

The release noted Fraser was on patrol in Warren on August 29 when he saw a Chevy Camaro speeding at about 75 mph.

Fraser caught up to the car and quickly noticed something was wrong.

The driver began to wave his arms and flag him down," according to the release.

In the footage, someone is heard screaming "help" repeatedly.

As Officer Fraser approached the Chevy, the driver frantically exclaimed that his 18-month-old nephew was not breathing. The child was turning blue and his eye were rolled to the back of his head."

The video shows Fraser calmly embrace the child and perform back-blows to help clear the toddler's airway.

"After a few seconds, the child eventually regurgitated a liquid and began to breath on his own," the release noted.

"He's getting air," the officer says, while another says, "He's breathing. He's alert."

An ambulance arrives at the scene and the child is taken to a nearby hospital.

He was later released and is back at home with his family, police said.

“Officer Fraser’s actions on this traffic stop are nothing short of heroic,"Commissioner William Dwyer noted in the release. "This incident shows that police work and traffic stops are not always about writing tickets or making arrests. In this case, what started off as a traffic stop for speeding resulted in Officer Fraser saving a child’s life. Officer Fraser relied on his training, communication skills, and compassion as he worked to resuscitate the child. Officer Fraser was also able to calm down the child’s family members who were understandably frantic over the situation"

Dwyer added that Fraser’s supervisors nominated him for an award, which Dwyer described as "beyond well-deserved."

"This incident is yet another example of the men and women of the Warren Police Department serving the community in a positive way," Dwyer said.
