PENSACOLA, Fla. (WEAR) — One of the newest members of the Pensacola Police Department (PPD) is being hailed a hero.
His heroic split-second decision likely saved the life of a suspect and fellow officers that were being threatened.
The scary moments were all captured on police body cam.
A disturbance Tuesday night sent Pensacola Police in full force to a home on North K Street.
A man armed with a shotgun was forcing his way into a home. A woman identified as the suspect's girlfriend made the frantic 911 call.
Before gaining entry, the suspect, identified as 36-year-old Oliver Hurst, retreated to a home right across the street.
Police body cam video shows the moment police rushed into the home to confront Hurst, who was still holding a weapon.
During those intense moments, K-9 Foster quite literally leaped into action, snatching the loaded weapon from the suspect's hand.
The 18-month-old German Shepard secured the weapon. Officers subdued Hurst with a stun gun.
He has been charged with armed burglary, aggravated assault, battery, criminal mischief and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.
K-9 Foster is named for Pensacola resident Dana and Lisa Foster whose generous donation made the purchase of Foster and K-9 Nashoba possible.
