Uber reportedly eyes self-driving scooters, bicycles

WASHINGTON (WZTV) - Uber is reportedly looking to apply self-driving technology to their scooters and bicycles.

At the center of reports from Tech Crunch and Business Insider is Chris Anderson, CEO of 3D Robotics. On Saturday, Anderson -who was attending a robotics event- tweeted Uber representatives announced at the event their intentions to launch "micromobility" robotics.

Anderson added the goal is to develop autonomous scooters & bikes that can drive themselves to charging locations or better locations for use.

A link to an application form was also shared by Anderson, who said the micromobility robotics team will be part of Uber's Jump division which offers electric scooter and bike services.

Uber scooters and/or JUMP bicycles are currently offered in 16 cities according to the company website. Cities include Atlanta, Dallas, New York, Sacramento, San Francisco, Austin, Denver, Phoenix, San Antonio, Santa Cruz, Washington D.C., Chicago, Los Angeles, Providence, San Diego, and Seattle.

JUMP is also considering Nashville as a future location to offer electric scooter service.
