The Tulsa Zoo has announced it has begun end-of-life care for its 43-year-old rhino, Jeannie.

Jeannie is a southern white rhinoceros who has naturally declining health due to her old age.

"As always, Jeannie is being monitored daily by staff members on her quality of life including mobility, appetite, and temperament," the Tulsa Zoo said.

The zoo says Jeannie has been a member of its family for 41 years and is loved by many for her gentle disposition.

She is described as the matriarch of the zoo and leads the rest of the animals with dignity and impressive vocalizations.

The Tulsa Zoo says Jeannie will remain in the Mary K. Chapman Rhino Reserve for visitors who wish to see her before her passing.
