A runaway tortoise is back to enjoying his favorite snacks at home after a 2-day adventure that included crossing an interstate highway and a forest trail wander!

Bowser the pet tortoise was reported missing from his home in the 9700 block of Southeast Claybourne Street on Tuesday

Meanwhile, on Thursday Portland Police were conducting an ATV outreach mission on the multi-use path along the west side of Interstate 205.

Officers were patrolling the trail to inform homeless people about the coming heatwave and handing out water when they spotted a tortoise walking down the middle of the path.

Police quickly caught up to the fugitive reptile and contactedMultnomah County Animal Control.

Animal control sent an officer to the location, who confirmed the tortoise was the missing Bowser.

Bowser's location meant he had managed to cross all the lanes of Interstate 205 without being injured, and then made quite a bit of progress along the trail.

PPB says the animal control officer contacted the grateful owner, who picked up the escapee.

It’s not clear where Bowser had been for the past two days, or how he traversed the interstate freeway, but his quick vacation is now over and he is back with his owners and snacking on his favorite food - greens!
