WASHINGTON (TNND) — When you sit down to eat Thanksgiving dinner or heat those "Turkey Day" leftovers, what's the first thing you put on your plate?
If you said stuffing, mashed potatoes, green beans or another side dish, you aren't alone. Campbell's State of the Sides report says 56% of Americans prefer side dishes for Thanksgiving over turkey. And, get this, nearly 40% shared they’d be happy with a plate full of only side dishes.
Even younger Americans are preparing more side dishes than ever. The report notes that 38% of 18-25-year-olds are making seven or more sides this year, which is more than the national average.
Campbell's also compiled a list of the top five side dishes for the 2024 season:
As for a look at the most-searched sides state by state, Google Trends created a map showing what sides people searched for most ahead of the holiday.
According to search results, many states are looking for casserole recipes, including green bean casserole, corn casserole and sweet potato casserole. Another popular choice? Mashed potatoes and stuffing.
There are some vegetables on the map too. South Carolina is looking up bacon-wrapped green beans, while Utah is searching for balsamic-glazed carrots.
Another thing to note: unconventional side dishes. Some states are looking up things like Brie mini tarts, ramen noodle salad, and pumpkin risotto.
