(KUTV) - Herriman High School journalism students have taken matters into their own hands and created a website in response to administrators taking control of their online school newspaper, The Telegraph.

The students allege that The Telegraphwas removed by the administration after students broke a story about a teacher's misconduct with accusations of inappropriate texting with a student.

"The staff of The Herriman High Telegraph believes in bringing quality journalism to the students, teachers, parents, and other members of the community in Herriman. The Telegraph can no longer accomplish this due to censorship by the administration of Herriman High School," states the new website created by students called The Telegram.

"The administration has taken control of The Telegraph's website and has frozen its social media accounts with no timetable for their return," the statement continued.

In addition to the new website, the students have started a petition on Change.orgto garner support to regain control of the school's newspaper.

The Jordan School District responded witha statement saying, "Jordan School District encourages thought-provoking, informative and accurate reporting of all stories in our school newspapers. It is the responsibility of students, school advisors and administrators to have every story meet these expectations. Again, we encourage students to participate in responsible journalism, sharing informative stories as part of their educational experience."
