Sea turtle hatchling born with 2 heads at South Carolina state park

EDISTO BEACH, S.C. (WPDE) – Edisto Beach State Park sea turtle patrol volunteers came across a very rare find on Wednesday.

A loggerhead sea turtle hatchling with two heads was found while volunteers did a routine nest inventory.

Three to five days after a sea turtle nest shows signs of major emergence, sea turtle patrol will dig down to determine the success of the nest by counting the hatched eggs, unhatched eggs and on occasions also find live hatchlings, South Carolina State Parks said.

Experts said the two-headed hatchling is a result of a genetic mutation and other two-headed hatchlings have been found in South Carolina in past years.

After taking a few photos, volunteers safely released the turtle with two others into the ocean.
