Poll: Should Confederate Memorial Day still be recognized as a state holiday in Alabama?

MOBILE, Ala. (WPMI) — The holiday commemorates those who died during the Civil War fighting for southern states. But for some, the holiday symbolizes a dark time in history.

At the Confederate Rest monument inside Mobile's Magnolia Cemetery, you'll find the graves of 1100 confederate soldiers.

Confederate Memorial Day is recognized as an official state holiday in Alabama and Mississippi, on April 26, meaning state government offices are closed.

Local members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans support what the day stands for, while critics say both this day and confederate monuments symbolize slavery.

Georgia removed the confederate reference from its state holiday in 2015.
