A cat rescued in South Carolina proves maybe they really do have nine lives.

Officer Wendt, whose first name was not provided, of the City of Charleston Police Department, rescued a cat who was reportedly running loose on the Ravenel Bridge.

The cat, who is now affectionately known now as "Officer Whiskers," was rescued safely and found to be unharmed.

He was taken to a local animal hospital "so he can prepare to find a new home."

The police department posted about Wendt saving the furry feline on social media. The post had garnered hundreds of reactions by Wednesday afternoon.

Some comments included, "He [Wendt] should adopt the cat; they have a bond now," and "Oh my gosh, now that’s a hero!!!! Thank you!"

One woman commented and said she recognized the cat as one she has been missing for an unspecified amount of time.

"I don’t know why he was on the bridge but I have looked at this picture from every angle and that is Daikin! I have flyers up all over James Island with a $500 reward for Daikin. I’m trying to call the Charleston Animal Society now," the woman wrote.
