A Southeast Portland business owner said a man was caught on surveillance video breaking into his furniture shop on Grand Avenue Monday morning.

It's one of four break-ins KATU learned about in the area early Monday.

Ian McGuinness swept up broken glass outside his Natian Brewery taproom on Southeast 13th Avenue and East Burnside Street, saying he found out about the mess around 6:20 a.m.

"I just got a phone call from the police that somebody made a smash and grab," McGuinness said. "They smashed through one of our doors, ran in and grabbed the till and ran out with it. The good part is we don't keep the money in here overnight so they basically just grabbed an empty drawer or maybe a couple quarters and nickels."

About two miles away there was more broken glass at two other businesses,Fettle Botanic Supply & Counsel and ZOOM+Care near Southeast Hawthorne Boulevard and 33rd Avenue. Those break-ins happened about 5:30 a.m.

Inside Fettle, which sells herbal medicines, a KATU crew saw cash drawers from registers on the floor. Next door at ZOOM+Care a manager cleaned up, saying they don't carry cash.

Over on Southeast Grand Avenue and Madison Street, KATU heard about yet another break-in, this one with surveillance video.

"There you go. You can see him comin' from the corner," the owner of Denali Furniture said, describing the video in which a man appears to throw a rock through a glass window around 3:30 a.m. on Monday. The business owner didn't want to publicly share his name.

"Rock in hand, he knew exactly where he was going. Straight to the office," the owner continued. "And then he just kind of searches both sides of the office. ... He spends, what? 45 seconds in there lookin' and he's in and out. ... He walks out like nothin' happened."

Police describe the suspect in the ZOOM+Care and Fettle burglaries as "a bald white male with latex gloves."

This is a developing story. We will post updated information as it becomes available.
