It's National Puppy Day and people across the country are celebrating by sharing photos and videos of their dogs.

National Puppy Day is meant to raise awareness about puppy mills and to get people to consider adoption.

In honor of the unofficial holiday, Camp Bow Wow released its list of the most popular puppy names of the past year.

For the second time in a row, Luna is taking home the top spot nationally. Bella and Charlie rank second and third, with Daisy and Lucy rounding out the top five.

According to Camp Bow Wow's Animal Health and Behavioral Expert, Erin Askeland, MSc, CPDT-KA, CBCC-KA, it's important to carefully choose a dog's name, as it will be used for training purposes and will have a significant effect on the dog's life.

Short names are helpful for getting your dog's attention," said Askeland. "A good rule of thumb is to stick to two syllables and avoid names that could sound like commands. For example, Clay is a cute name, but it may sound like' stay' to a dog."

Camp Bow Wow compelled data based on nearly 400,000 furry friends.
