LARGO, Md. (WJLA) — Forty-two years after Dan Helsel was born in an unusual place, history repeated itself.
This time, though, he had a different role.
Helsel, a Prince George's County firefighter-paramedic, helped deliver a newborn baby girl Monday in the back of a Prince George's County ambulance– 42 years to the day of when he was born in the back of a Prince George's County ambulance on the side of the Beltway.
It was the first time in Helsel's career that he decided to come to work.
When Helsel arrived at the scene, the mother, already in labor, had contractions that were a minute apart. Helsel said the baby's head was already starting to come out by the time they left the parking lot in the ambulance.
Later, Helsel, the mother of the newborn and the newborn posed for a photo, which was shared on Twitter with the mother's permission.
Both the mother and baby girl, named Zoey, were in good health following the latter's birth.
Congratulations to the mother and her family, and happy birthday to Dan and Zoey!
