WASHINGTON (TND) — Select fans enjoying America's national pastime this Fourth of July will have another topping option at the ballpark hot dog stand.
PepsiCo announced in a news release Tuesday that it is partnering with the Culinary Institute of America and four Major League Baseball franchises to debut a new condiment.
Pepsi Colachup, advertised as the "world's first Pepsi-infused condiment," will be available on Independence Day at the Arizona Diamondback's Chase Field, the Minneapolis Twins' Target Field, Comerica Park in Detroit and Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. Although all 30 teams are playing across 15 stadiums Tuesday, only these four will hold the first taste of Colachup.
The concept is both simple and creative. The distinctive flavors and vibrant citrus blend of Pepsi enhances the bright and tangy characteristics of ketchup, offsetting the smokiness of the hot dog," said David Kamen, director of client experience for CIA Consulting. "It's a whole new way to enjoy two American classics!
Commenters online have been quick to note that the fusing of tangy ketchup and sweet soda Pepsi is already somewhat common in the world of condiments through barbeque sauce.
"Pepsi has long been part of American culture and its cool crisp taste has been a favorite beverage choice for generations of Americans. We have always known that hot dogs taste better with Pepsi, and now the experts think so too," said Jenny Danzi, senior director at Pepsi. "We're thrilled to elevate this unparalleled pairing."
According to the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council, Americans are expected to eat over 150 million hot dogs on July 4 alone.
