MENTOR, Ohio (WKRC) - An Ohio mother is upset after a substitute teacher at her daughter's elementary school told students that Santa Claus and his elves weren't real.

It happened in a third-grade class atSterling Morton Elementary School, WJW reports.

The students were excited to show the substitute teacher their class "Elf on a Shelf."

That's when the teacher told students the heartbreaking news.

"I was angry," the mother said. "I just want to know why she took it upon herself to do that, why she felt it was OK to shatter a childhood."

The teacher's husband told WJW that he believes the students may have misinterpreted what his wife said.

The Mentor school district issued a statement calling it in "poor taste" and the school principal called the parents of each student in the class to apologize.
