LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKRC) — A Kentucky mother found herself in quite the predicament after her young son mistakenly ordered thousands of lollipops through Amazon.
Holly LaFavers of Lexington took to Facebook on Sunday after 22 boxes of Dum-Dums showed up at her door.
In the post, LaFavers informed friends and family that her son, Liam, had ordered 30 cases of Dum-Dums, adding that Amazon would not let her return the boxes.
LaFavers said that she contacted the company as soon as she realized what had happened and was instructed to reject the delivery. According to LaFavers, however, the driver never knocked or rang her doorbell, which prevented her from doing so.
To recoup the losses, she offered to sell off the Dum-Dums for $130 per box (retail price). According to the Amazon page, each box comes with 2,340 suckers.
When speaking to WKYT, LaFavers said that Liam is neurodivergent and was born with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, which she said affects his decision-making abilities, adding that Liam had ordered the suckers while playing with her phone over the weekend.
“He told me that he wanted to have a carnival, and he was ordering the Dum-Dums as prizes for his carnival. Again, he was being friendly and being kind to his friends, but he’s just not able to think into the future and see what consequences would be,” LaFavers told the station.
She added that eight of the 30 cases ordered turned up missing and said she had to visit the post office to rectify the situation, per WKYT. The packages at the post office were ultimately returned to sender, the outlet reported.
In an update, LaFavers confirmed that she was contacted by Amazon after "a long day of working with the bank" and speaking to "a few news stations" and informed that she would be receiving a refund. To those who had already purchased a box, LaFavors said she would get them what they ordered or donate the money to a charity of their choice. According to WKYT, Amazon refunded a total of $4,000 for the whopping order of lollipops.
LaFavers confirmed to WKYT that she would be adjusting the settings on her phone to make sure it didn't happen twice.
