FORSYTH, Ga. -- A Georgia High School football coach was arrested in mid-December for reportedly telling one of his players to eat marijuana during a traffic stop.
According to a Monroe County incident report, in the early morning hours of December 17th, a Monroe County deputy pulled over a Dodge Avenger driven by 25-year-old LeRon Furr on Georgia 401. Two 17-year-old passengers and an 18-year-old passenger were also in the vehicle.
Upon making contact with the occupants, the deputy reported smelling marijuana and seeing pieces of marijuana on the 17-year-old front seat passenger's shirt. When the deputy asked if there was any marijuana inside the vehicle, Furr stated that there wasn't.
When a deputy asked the occupants to exit the vehicle, they noticed one of the teens eating marijuana so they handcuffed him.
Upon questioning, the teen told a deputy that he was asleep in the car and that when the deputy began to initiate the traffic stop, Furr told him to eat the marijuana. He said that he was a high school football player and that Furr was his coach so felt like he did not have any other choice. The two other teens in the vehicle gave the same story.
It is not clear at this time at which school Furr coaches, though according to the Ledger-Enquirer, he played for Carver High School in Columbus, Ga., Oklahoma State University and Fort Valley State University before being signed to the Columbus Lions.
A deputy also found a small bag of marijuana on the front seat passenger floorboard. Furr admitted that it was his and that he had told the teen to eat it.
Furr was arrested for texting and driving and possession of less than one ounce of marijuana. He was taken to the Monroe County Jail.
The three teens were released with a verbal warning.
