GREEN BAY, Wis. (WLUK) — Fireworks won't be the only thing lighting up the night sky this Fourth of July eve.
According to space.com, the full moon on Monday night will be a supermoon. Supermoons occur when the moon is closer to the Earth at the time of a full moon. The moon can appear up to 30% brighter and 14% larger -- though those differences may be hard to perceive for people who don't pay close attention to the moon.
July's full moon will be the first of four consecutive supermoons.
The full moon in July is nicknamed the Buck Moon. According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, this is because July is when deer antlers are growing rapidly.
Other traditional names for July's full moon are Feather Moulting Moon, Salmon Moon, Berry Moon, Moon When the Chokecherries are Ripe, Month of the Ripe Corn Moon, Raspberry Moon, Thunder Moon and Halfway Summer Moon.
