Baby kangaroo rescued from floodwaters as 2 crocodiles lurk nearby

BURKETOWN, Australia (TND) — Police in Australia rescued a baby kangaroo, or joey, after it got trapped in crocodile-infested floodwaters.

Queensland Police posted a video last week on Twitter showing officers patrolling the waters in Burketown behind a residential community, where they spotted a stranded joey in desperate need of help. Police said a helicopter was flying over the water at the same time and saw two large crocodiles lurking nearby.

In the video, an officer carefully picks up the animal and says "Hey, shh, it's all right mate." It was then taken to dry land, but not before giving a small token of appreciation to the officers who came to its rescue.

The joey stopped and looked back before quickly hopping away.

Officers said it was "a timely reminder to stay out of floodwaters as you never know what is lurking beneath."

The outback town was hit with major flooding last week, leading to sewage and water treatment being temporarily cut off. Police said all displaced residents were accommodated and supported byQueensland Community Recovery Services.

Burketown is a northerncoastal locality that has a population of only 238, according to a 2016 census count.
