ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Ala. (WPMI) — It may have taken a 5-year-old to show people but kindness and friendship are still very much alive.
It all unfolded in an Alabama kindergarten classroom with a lesson about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
It was a lesson about kindness and love, and kids were listening.
"We just had a whole lesson on how you show love to everybody no matter what. It was about kindness and how you treat people how you want to be treated," said Mandy Strawbridge a kindergarten teacher at Huxford Elementary.
Little did she know 5-year-old John Reese Booker was not only listening but ready to put his "kindness plan," into action.
You see John Reese's favorite teacher is Miss Deborah Peterson, a teacher's aide at Huxford Elementary. John Reese says the plan was, "to take her out on a date," and it worked.
I tested him last year in the spring. He came here not knowing a lot and I said, 'John Reese, you are going to be mine,' said Peterson. "'I'm going to work with you.' and I told his mom not to worry about him because we like for them to come to us not knowing anything so we can see them grow, and he has really bloomed. He's attached to me and I've been attached to him ever since.
John Reese knew Valentine’s Day was coming up and he didn’t want Peterson to be alone. He gave her a rose and a card he made himself.
Peterson said: "I opened up the card and it said, 'will you go to dinner with me at David’s Saturday at 6 o'clock?' ... and I said, "of course, yes."
John Reese said he picked the catfish restaurant because he knew it was Peterson's favorite place to eat is at.
