After a promotiongot out of hand last week at Build-a-Bear Workshops across the nation, the company is shifting away from hosting a “pay your age” deal on a single day and are instead holding the deal during your child’s birth month.

On the company’s website, they announced a “count your candles” approach to the promotion that involves the child's actual birthday.

“Bring the birthday boy or girl in to count their candles any day during their birthday month, and the age they are turning is how much it costs to make their own Birthday Treat Bear! Regularly $14, Count Your Candles, pay your age – our birthday treat to you!” the company said.

The child has to be registered with the Build-a-Bear Bonus Club to receive the deal. You can register for free through the company’s website.

On Friday, an overwhelming number of customers lined up at Build -a-Bear Workshops across the nation, including here in Portland.

The company had to call off the deal, citing local law enforcement’s concerns “due to crowd and safety controls."

They did offer people who were turned away from the stores a $15 voucher for a future bear, which has to be redeemed at one of their stores by the end of August.
