A new game has hit the internet called Active Shooter. It's an active shooter simulation game on Steam. Players can be the active shooter or the person who takes the shooter down.
You can take a look at what the game actually looks like here. Viewer discretion is advised.
In the description of the game it says:
"Pick your role, gear up and fight or destroy! Be the good guy or the bad guy. The choice is yours! Only in "Active Shooter", you will be able to pick the role of an Elite S.W.A.T team member or the actual shooter. Your objective would be either to neutralize the target (active shooter) or be the target himself. Depending on the role, your objective might be to protect and extract or hunt and destroy."
Players can choose different simulation places, including a school.
Steam left a disclaimer on their site urging players not to take the game seriously saying, "This is only meant to be the simulation and nothing else. If you feel like hurting someone or people around you, please seek help from local psychiatrists or dial 911 (or applicable). Thank you.”
Variety reports Steam, the website where the game is published, will let anyone publish a videogame for $100 as long as it doesn't promote hate speech, pornography or adult content.
There is a petition on Change.org for the company to take the game down. Over 24,000 people have signed the petition which says, "The company is taking the stand that this game is legal because of free speech and everything else that tech billionaires hide behind when they are doing something the public knows is absolutely, morally corrupt but legally fine - but we cannot stand for this."
The petition's author, Stephanie Robinett, asks "How can anyone sleep at night knowing that they are profiting from turning deadly school shootings into entertainment?"
Valve Corporation has not responded to the petition.
