BEAUMONT, Texas (KFDM) - Gator Country has made an historic catch, according to its owner.

Gator Country owner Gary Saurage says in Liberty County his crew captured the largest alligator ever caught alive in the state of Texas.

Saurage says the gator measures 13 feet, 8 inches and weighs almost 900 pounds.

Saurage says he received a call from the federal wildlife refuge in Dayton reporting that the gator had been seen at a boat ramp there.

People gather at that ramp to crab and clean fish, and apparently the gator became accustomed to it and would frequent the ramp.

Saurage says it took four people to help retrain the gator with rope. They had to feed the gator chicken to get him to move closer to the rope.

Saurage has enlisted the help of the public to name the gator.
