HASTINGS, Neb. (NTV) — Being an animal-lover is an understatement for 10-year-old Austyn Ladd.
Having given his own animals a warm, loving home, he wanted to do the same for pets waiting to be adopted.
So, when he and his mother, Jolene, found a good deal on dog beds, he used his money to buy them all.
He got a cart and I got a cart, and we filled them up, we took all of them," said Jolene. “We donated 27 of them, I think."
It wasn’t just money saved in a piggy bank.
He used all his Christmas money on all the beds. He did not have a dollar left to his name,” said Jolene. “I honestly cried on the way home. I was touched."
He donated the beds to Start Over Rover, an animal shelter in Hastings, Nebraska.
Photos show cats snuggled up in a few of the beds.
The donation gave the facility the chance to give their animals a new clean place to sleep.
“It is very thoughtful of him," said Start Over Rover's Executive Director Kelly Zubrod. "They definitely raised him well because he’s thinking of others instead of himself."
And Austyn said it was money well-spent.
“I don’t think they should have just these blankets," he said. "They should have a nice warm bed just like we would like it."
