March is National Umbrella Month, and as "April showers bring May flowers," an umbrella would be come in useful, according to nationaldaycalendar.com.

The basic model of the umbrella came about over 4,000 years ago.

The Chinese took it upon themselves to waterproof the design.

It wasn't until the 1900s that the umbrella became what is known and used today.

  • Use an umbrella whether it is raining, snowing, or sunshine
  • Donate umbrellas to local shelters
  • Learn the history of the umbrella
  • Use #NationalUmbrellaMonth on social media to share how you celebrated

The month-long observation was created by Thomas Edward Knibb in 2003, said the website.
