National Ellis Island Family History Day encourages people to take a look at their ancestry and possibly find out who came through Ellis Island, according to nationaldaycalendar.com.

Ellis Island opened its doors on January 1, 1892, and Annie Moore is said to be the first person that was processed.

She came from Ireland with her two younger brothers at the age of 17.

The trip to America would reunite the three kids with their parents and two older siblings.

From 1892 to 1924, Ellis Island was at its busiest.

On April 17, 1907, the immigration processing station saw its busiest day with 11,747 people recorded to have passed through.

During 1907, over a million people were recorded to have passed through.

Ellis Island's doors closed on November 12, 1954, and throughout its years in operation approximately 12 million people were processed.

How to take place in such a historical day:

  • Check into your ancestry
  • Take a look at old photographs and documents that might've recorded who from your family came through Ellis Island
  • Visit ellisisland.org to find out more on famous immigrants
  • Use #EllisIslandFamilyHistoryDay on social media to share how you celebrated

The day was made official to celebrate Ellis Island's busiest day in 2001, said the website.
