On March 9, 1959, Barbara Millicent Roberts A.K.A Barbie was introduced at the American International Toy Fair in New York, according to nationaldaycalendar.com.

The iconic toy was created by Ruth Handler who noticed that toy makers who had been mass producing toys for years didn't make any with adult features.

Using different marketing strategies, the toy took off, and estimates show over a billion Barbies have been sold in over 150 countries worldwide.

Barbie has come under fire for having an unattainable figure for women, but since she has evolved in shape, style, and color.

She keeps changing, even today, to keep up with the modern world.

In 1961, Mattel, the maker of Barbie, introduced her boyfriend Ken Carson.

Her family dynamic keeps changing as well. She has five sisters that have been introduced throughout the years: Kelly, Chelsea, Skipper, Stacie, and Krissy.

In 1998, the Toy Hall of Fame inducted Barbie to sit alongside other iconic toys such as the yo-yo and chess.
